Positive Thinking

Read our 'Positive Thinking' post in 'Positive Thinking' section on pthinki | Positive Thoughts blog.We have always, a question a question in our mind, been emerged - 'What is positive thinking... actually?' and we also have some miracle type conception of 'Positive Thinking' somewhere in our mind. But really, what is positive thinking? The whole post is nothing and all about the positive thinking!
The first connection of 'Positive Thinking' is made with the 'Optimism'. Means, almost there is a common acceptation of 'Positive Thinking' as 'Optimism'! In this regard we must see the actual meanings of both words. Let's see the actual meaning -
According to the definitions shown by google after searched in the 'google translate' - "optimism means hopefulness and the confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something."
According to the Cambridge Dictionary - "the quality of being full of hope and emphasizing the good parts of a situation, or a belief that something good will happen."
We personally would like to define the 'Optimism' as the tendency or the signs of having a hope or hopes that there is good to be happened.
We have always complaints regarding the available things. If we have to be satisfied by our available things we should always a positive thinking attitude and see whether there are some good things or not besides the things those are irritating us. According to Abraham Lincoln
"We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses."
According to Alphonse Karr, [A Tour Round My Garden (1956)],
"Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses."
Keep your attitude good favourable, your attitude is responsible for your whole behaviour and your behaviour towards the people, incidents and decision making decides your returns. According to Oprah Winfrey,
"The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude."
Don’t ignore problems because mere ignoring we can’t escape from facing them. Each and every problem has a solution. When we ignore, keep the problems unwanted then we also don't see the solutions. While or before ignoring your problem, always seek for the solutions. According to Joseph Sugarman,
"Each problem has hidden in it an opportunity so powerful that it literally dwarfs the problem. The greatest success stories were created by people who recognized a problem and turned it into an opportunity."
You cannot stop the thunders, you cannot stop the hazards, but yes, you can survive, you can learn how to survive and you can arrange to survive! According to Zig Ziglar,
"You cannot tailor - make the situations in life but you can tailor - make the attitudes to fit those situations."
According to Jon Kabat-Zinn,
"You cannot stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."
If you are thinking in these ways, one would like to congratulate you! Because this may be a commencement of new thinking, a commencement of positive thinking!
Think what’s in your control and what’s not. You should use the components which are in your control and recognize, consider or release, sometimes neglect those components which are not in your control.
While struggling for achieving one thing, if it is becoming hard, then we should confirm whether some other better opportunities are knocking our door or not?
According to Mandy Hale, (The Single Woman, Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass)
"Sometimes it takes a heartbreak to shake us awake and help us see we are worth so much more than we're settling for."
If someone is thinking it's over after losing opportunities or after having a loss, then he is wrong and he is thinking in a negative way; because there is always a way; and there always a new beginning and it happens only after a stop. According to Willie Nelson
"Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results."
There always a sunrise after a sunset. If we are just worrying without knowing this fact, then it's our negative thinking. According to Lyndon B. Johnson,
"Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose."
We better should stop narrow thinking and should start thinking, considering the alternative opportunities instead of getting negative thoughts in our mind and a lot of burden in and stress on our brain. According to Joyee Meyer,
"You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind."
While thinking positively or becoming a positive thinker, you should
  • Identify negative thoughts
  • Replace these negative thoughts with more positive ones.
However, you should consider some of the following tips: -
  • Avoid negative self-talk
  • Try humour
  • Cultivate optimism
  • Seek happiness and joy.
You can imagine new ideas to come alive, you can dream of new achievements; but daydreaming about the positive outcomes based on nothing more than wishful thinking - can actually damage your chances of getting what you want in life.
We can make the things which are in our control, to be happened as we expect. For example,
We can make tea as sweet as we want, but we can't make the things to be happened according to our choice, which are not in our control.
For example, if we expect or hope that the sun should rise on 9:00 am then that impossible or that will never happen.
Suppose there is a pond. There are no fishes in the pond and there is a board hanged beside the pond - "There are no fishes in this pond." You haven't seen the board and you have sat on the side to catch the fish. Here your hope is - "I shall get at least a fish!" Is it possible? No, it's not. Because expecting something where already is nothing is an unrealistic optimism.
Suppose there is a situation that there are free books by the government to the first standard students. And you are willing to sell some books in the market to the first standard students. Here your hope is some books will be sold. But who will buy your books, as they are already free. Here you are practicing an unrealistic optimism.
Positive thinking is seeing the actual and factual situation than that of our imagined one. Positive thinking is just not seeing but considering also the actual, real and factual situation for choosing
the right path, for decision making, for future planning and for getting the expected and desired success, outcome. According to Willard Scot,
"Positive feelings come from being honest about yourself and accepting your personality, and physical characteristics, warts and all, and from belonging to a family that accepts you without question"
According to Dalai Lama,
"See the positive side, the potential, and make an effort."
We should always see the positive perspective of any condition, situation or an act. We should always see the positive side of that one and considering that we should act in that situation or condition. According to Helen Keller,
"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow."
Suppose, there is an eight hour working you have to do and you are tired of such act again and again daily, you unwilling for this. In this condition you should see the positive part of the eight hour working that by this working you are getting busy and there are not emerging the useless and uncomfortable thoughts in your mind. You should think again regarding a positive part of the working that you are getting tired at night and having a well sleep by this. By the working you are in people having some interaction and also you are earning money, experience and a status.
If you leave working and want to live a lazy life, what will happen? You will also lose all these things which are emerging by the working.
And what will you get by the lazy life?
Just you will realize that eventually you are experiencing hard to pass your empty time. A lot of useless and uncomfortable thoughts, you will see, emerging in your mind and you will be experiencing the discomfort.
You should think again regarding a positive part of the working that you are getting tired at and having a well sleep by this. By the cause of working you are in people having some interaction and also you are earning money, experience and a status.
If you leave working, in the chase of a lazy life, what will happen? You will lose all these things which are emerging by the working. Sometimes, you might get attracted towards bad habits or bad addictions. So seeing the positive side is very important of everything and ignoring the unwanted side.
Positive thinking doesn't mean that you just hope only joyful results and ignore life's less pleasant situations. Positive thinking means that you should approach and consider the unpleasantness in your life in a more positive and productive way. In positive thinking you think or you should think or expect that the best is going to happen and not the worst, and you just not think or expect, then. In positive thinking you further proceed to try to let the best things happen.
But it is not possible that every time you will get the happiness, health and a happy ending because the incorporation, construction, building and destruction is the law of nature itself and everything which has got constructed has to be destructed someday. Therefore, expecting the happiness, health and happy ending may be a positive thinking but only expecting them for always would be foolishness. Knowing fact and being conscious about the realities, itself is a positive thinking. So we should accept firstly the laws of nature, the facts and realities before practicing the positive thinking, optimism and hopeful life.
According to the leading personality blog, positive thinking is a mental attitude in which you expect good and favourable results. A positive mind waits for happiness, health and a happy ending in any situation. Therefore, you should change your thinking and you can change your life. According to Lord Buddha,
"We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think, when the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves."
"The mind is everything. What we think we become."
"All that we are is the result of what we have thought."
According to Mathematics,
"If there is a positive sign there is going to happen an addition and if there is a negative sign there is going to happen a deduction."
In the same way in our life, if there is a positive sign in your mind
(i.e. e.g. you are saying, 'Yes, I am going to do.'), then there an addition surely. And if there is a negative sign in your mind (i.e. e.g. you are saying, 'Yes, I am not going to do.'), and then there is a deduction definitely.
The important thing in this regard is, in which cases you are keeping the positive or negative sign in your mind should be on considering the results emerging thereof. Because if you have a positive sign for a criminal act in your mind would be a result of a punishment emerging thereof. And if you have a negative sign in your mind for consumption of a liquor would be a good result for your health.
So, keep positive sign for wanted results and keep negative sign in your mind for the unwanted results.
Here, just saying 'Yes' to good things and saying 'No' to bad things would be a positive thinking!
Understanding and considering the upcoming scenario, event, perspective or phenomena in a positive way and not in a negative for our prosperity, stableness is a positive thinking.
The prosperity and stableness may be of our mind, body, society, earnings and development etc.
There is a good relation between positive attitude and optimism. If you are optimistic naturally your attitude becomes positive and if you are pessimistic naturally your attitude becomes negative. So, it
is important that you should be optimistic. But one thing is there that your optimism should be grounded on reality and it should not be unrealistic.
E.g. A person cannot expect or be optimistic of not overcoming the laws of gravity after jumping from a tree.
There is a well-known example regarding the optimism i.e. of half glass of water, it is considered that by seeing to which an optimistic person says that the glass is half filled and the pessimistic person says that the glass is half empty.
But, we should understand that both the perspectives are real and correct. The glass is half filled as well as half empty.
Here what we should we think that considering only half filling of the glass would be ignoring of half emptiness of the glass and considering the half emptiness of the glass would be the ignoring of the half filling of the glass.
Hence, both the perspectives should be seen and considered consciously, and it is important.
According to Zig Zigler,
"Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will"
William James says in this regard,
"Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power."
"A strong, positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success."– Unknown
Meaning of Positive Thinking
According to Collins English Dictionary, Positive Thinking is just...
An Optimistic Attitude.
According to the dictionaries positive thinking is ...
"A technique for changing your attitude and fostering optimism."
They mentioned further...
"The effect which thoughts can have on life has been proved by people who have tried positive thinking, mind dynamics or visualizations. These people believe that positive thinking can cure cancer."
So we can understand in how extent the importance and ability of a positive thinking is.
Charlene M. Proctor, Ph.D., the official guide to positive thinking explained after referring various references, in an article published on selfgrowth.com, has explained the definition of positive thinking. She says in this regard,
"...positive thinking is a discipline that trains the human mind to change a perceived reality by repeatedly making positive mental statements. ...positive thinking is a process of choosing positive emotions from stimuli in the environment and applying them to perceptions and beliefs. The objective of positive thinking is to create an outlook that translates into a new or better chosen reality."
Let's see what the word 'Positive' means. According to the dictionary the word positive as a noun means...
1) A good quality or attribute.
2) An affirmative or constructive quality or attribute.
3) A result of a test or experiment indicating the presence of something.
4) A number greater than zero.
According to the dictionary the word positive as an adjective means...
1) Consisting in or characterized by the presence rather than the absence of distinguishing features.
2) Constructive, optimistic or confident.
3) With no possibility of doubt, definite
4) (Of a quantity) greater than zero.
Hence a positive thinking means...
1) Thinking of, with or for good quality or attribute.
2) Thinking of, with or for affirmative or constructive quality or attribute.
3) Thinking indicating the presence and not the absence of something.
4) Thinking of, with or for the number which is greater than zero.

As mentioned by Remez Sasson, on succesconciousness.com, in an article - 'The Power of Positive Thinking',
"Positive Thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses the bright side of life and expects positive results."
He further states, that a positive person anticipates, happiness, health and success and believes he or she can overcome any obstacle and difficulty.
We should see things as they are, with the help of our conscious mind and clear focus. We should understand the reasoning behind the events with the help of rationality and should see whether there is a reason or intention of getting a better opportunity and success instead of getting disappointed. We should move our concentration towards the availabilities of other opportunities and the possibilities of success.
Positive thinking is not saying mere 'Yes' to all the things; but it is the act of seeking out the bad things and saying 'No' to them.
You should change your thoughts, schedule, act and your attitude will get changed.
Mere thinking positively will not give you a success, there must be a positive action also.
